The use of indoor tanning eye protection is extremely important, whether you go to a tanning salon or use a home tanning bed. Indoor tanning goggles are a must-have for anyone using any kind of tanning bed. In fact, it's the law. According to federal regulations, all indoor tanners must use eye protection that blocks 99 percent of UVA rays and 99.9 percent of UVB rays. Some states require tanning salons to give their clients free indoor tanning goggles, while others do not.

Without proper eye protection, the eyes can be severely damaged by indoor tanning. The eyelid alone does not provide adequate protection from UVA and UVB rays, which damage eyes in different ways. UVA rays cause damage to the retina, while UVB rays cause damage to the cornea. This damage can include painful burns on the cornea.

Symptoms of corneal damage include pain that is described as both soreness and irritation. The eye tissues also commonly swell when damage has been done to the cornea. UVA rays can cause burns to the retina, which can cause color perception problems, including sensitivity to color. Both UVA and UVB rays can cause irreparable damage to vision.

Luckily, today's indoor tanning goggles are designed to provide excellent protection against these rays. If you operate a tanning salon, make certain that each and every client has approved eye protection before using a tanning bed. If you have a client who balks at the idea because they don't want the tan line from the goggles, direct them to the indoor tanning eye protection products that fit over each eye with no bridge. Unfortunately, these are not able to be used in stand-up booths because they don't stay in place when standing, but are perfect for traditional tanning bed use.
