Capacitors and ignitors for tanning beds have various designs and types. They range from the very simple to the more complex. Specifically, capacitors are used to increase the power input allowing you to use twice the number of lamps on a particular circuit. Capacitors are an essential part of a CWA and a regulated lag circuit system, which will not operate without capacitors.There are two types of capacitors, oil-filled and dry-film capacitors.

Oil-filled capacitors are placed inside a metal encasement and have a dielectric fluid filling that can be used at an average rating of 90 degrees Celsius. Its voltage ratings can reach up to 525 volts. Dry film capacitors, like the name suggests, have no fluid and are placed inside a plastic encasement. These types of capacitors are available up to 400 volts only.

Ignitors, on the other hand, give a brief, high voltage to break the gas down between the electrodes in a light bulb. These pulses range between several hundred bolts and 5 kilovolts. They are primarily timed to occur at the same time with OCV and not doing so will cause the lamp to malfunction.

There are three basic types of ignitors. The first one is a capacitor with a voltage sensitive switch. It is the simplest type of ignitor, giving off 600 volt pulses and known to be low-cost. The second one is a combination of a voltage sensitive switch and a capacitor charging circuit. It is the most commonly used ignitor in America and is compatible with CWA and HX. The last type is similar to the first but contains a pulse transformer.
